Welcome to Rimshot.org

Switching DNS providers
At some point during the weekend, we will be switching DNS providers. This will mean that for some users, there will be a downtime of up to 48 hours (but more than likely much much less), depending on how often user DNS servers refresh their cache.
The current target is Saturday night, but may change at the last moment.

Downtime tonite
Hellooo, It’s that time of year again. Yes, sleepless nights. Things that go bump, and an OS upgrade. The web server will go down this evening for a few hours and fires will be fought until everything is back to normal. I expect some issues with the Django install, but nothing major.

Moving offices. Again!
There will be a small outage as we move the server to a new shared office with F. Preparations are underway to convert my cave into a suitable habitat for the new arrival. It should just be down the time it takes to shutdown the webserver, move it downstairs and boot it back up.

What does it have in it's PHP pocketses?
As some of you know, I’ve beeen looking for employment as a PHP web developer. I’ve included some useful examples of my work on my CV, but those only display the end-result of the code, not the code itself.
I have thrown together a quick PHP example code page for future employers and friends alike. There are no aesthetic considerations for the site. It exists only as a link page to source code.

The right tool for the job is sometimes not the right one afterall.
It amazes me sometimes that software religious fanaticism is still rampant in this day and age of “there is no right way to do something as long as it works”. I ran headlong into this today while twittering.
This site is running a development version of Django, and as such there are sometimes major changes to the codebase that you have to compensate for. One such change was the recommendation to move from Apache running mod_python to mod_wsgi. It was a relatively painless changeover, but I just couldn’t get the admin media files (the admin site has a library ...

Lean and Mean
Hello boils and ghouls! (I always wanted to use it before I look like the cryptkeeper)
The conversion seems to have worked with only a few issues remaining on the backend to straighten out. The conversion of the public side and basic functionality only took an hour or two. It seems that it took me much longer to actually find two consecutive hours to dedicate to the conversion.
I have removed quite a bit of half completed applications of questionable utility on this website and will concentrate on fixing everything that needs to be fixed before moving on to other ...

Mostly dead means partly alive!
The last Ubuntu distro release destroyed my existing apache/django install, right when I was gearing up to do a major construction project on the house. Now that it is complete, I may now turn my attention to the borked install. Miracle Max would be proud.

Small Fix Applied
I recently noticed that a small bug had crept into the army performance page of the site. A rogue ”$” was eradicated and now works as intended. Well at least it looks good from Lynx, since I’m still rebuilding a FreeBSD install.

A rimshot without drums is something totally different
With a domain name that has taken a new slang meaning over the years, I think it might be time to actually incorporate some drum articles around here. This will likely have a side effect of actually having me study the instrument instead of just playing it. I mean after 10 years, I may want to take it seriously.
Redesign is needed then posting starts.

Canada Post not best liars
I ordered a book from Amazon recently. No biggie, everyone does it, and I do it on occasion as well.
Now when you order a book from Amazon in canada you get an Expresspost tracking number so that you know a estimated delivery date, and amazon knows that the package has indeed been delivered and not lost. Yesterday was the delivery date on the book and I was waiting at home for it. all day. No package came.
Imagine my surpise when I check on the canadapost site to see that delivery was attempted, and that a delivery notice card ...
